Hospital Bills (Save $$$)

I saved  $868.66 on my hospital bills!

Your hospital bills may include:  surgery, pet scan, CT scan, echocardiogram, mammogram, x-rays, ultrasounds, MRI, lab work, genetic tests, and any other large test performed at the hospital.

Actual cost for my hospital services:  $54,785.78

Contracted amount my insurance Paid:  $10,472.20

My “out of pocket” cost:  $1,594.88

Amount I saved on my “out of pocket” cost:  $868.66

Amount I actually paid:  $726.22

*I was then able to make $30 per month no interest payments on the $726.22

I do not know of any grants that will cover hospital bills.  However, after your health insurance has paid their portion and you know what your copay will be for these services, you can call the billing department of your hospital and request to apply for financial aid or apply for a discount on your bill.

Most people have no idea that you can ask for a discount or apply for financial aid on your remaining out of pocket costs.  Most people assume that the bill you receive is what you have to pay and that is simply not necessarily the case.

I really didn’t think our family would qualify for financial aid or any discounts because we own our home and we have a decent income, however I was surprised to find out that I was approved for about a 54% discount on my remaining balances that I owed the hospital!

So I recommend that you apply because you may be surprised to find that you qualify.

To apply for this you simply need to call the billing office of your hospital, the number should be on your bills, this may be at a different location and different city for that matter than where you received treatment.

You will need to let them know that you would like to apply for financial aid or a discount on your bill.

Make sure when you talk to the billing department that you talk to them about ALL your outstanding bills, because they can ALL be grouped together when you apply for the financial aid and then if approved you will get a discount on each of them.

Some billing departments will take your application over the phone and others will mail you a short application to fill out that you will mail back into their office.  I found out in just a couple weeks that I was approved.  At that point they grouped all my bills together and I was then able to set up a $30 per month payment plan on my balance that was left.  And there was no interest charged on that amount as long as I made the $30 per month payment.

Make sure you keep copies of all health related expenses that you pay for since you may be able to write them off on your taxes.

By following this process and applying for the discount, it saved me:

$868.66 !!   (Totally worth a little paperwork and time!)
